Place Jeu de Balles
Place Jeu de Balles isn’t that exceptional in itself, but it is the center of the Marolles area which has undergone a major transformation over the past few years. Housing lepers in the middle ages and Jews in the beginning of the 20th century, the area has a fascinating social history. The Marolles are now a place full of character, offering a hub for antiques, hipsters stores, as well as various exquisite restaurants.
The best moment to visit is in the morning, which is when the daily flea market takes places on Place Jeu de Balles. Take your time to browse through the second-hand items for sale, and you might stumble upon unexpected little treasures! Make sure to haggle before buying, which is part of the game. Afterwards, have a drink in one of the bars surrounding the square while overlooking the hustle and bustle of the market.
The major arteries of the area are Rue Haute, Rue Blaes and Rue des Tanneurs. Don’t forget to look up while wandering through the surrounding streets, as the area boasts various beautiful cartoon walls. If you feel hungry afterwards, try one of the amazing restaurants in the Marolles.
You could end your day by taking the elevator up to Place Poelaert and the Palace of Justice, where you’ll enjoy a beautiful panoramic view over the area, which is especially nice in the evening.
