Velvet Peck
After discovering the breakfast, brunch and lunch options at Velvet Peck, we had to update the list of our favorite brunch places in Brussels. This bright and airy eatery with a lovely outdoor terrace is conveniently located at the exit of the subway on Place Sainte-Catherine, making it a great starting point for a lazy Sunday as well as a nice spot for a relaxing coffee break on any other day.
Originally known as Café Velvet, the restaurant recently joined the Peck family, along with Peck 20, Peck 47, Woodpecker and Streetpecker. The drinks menu has been expanded with thoughtfully presented breakfasts and meal options. What’s more, they serve brunch all day – any day!
As we went over around noon, everything from the breakfast, brunch and lunch menu was still available. The combination of the elaborate menu and the many mouth-watering photos on their Instagram account made it impossible to choose just one dish. I wanted to try them all. In the end, my shortlist included: Mr. Fluffy (a pile of pretty American pancakes), Brazilian Blast (Acaï berry, orange juice and banana, topped with chia seeds and homemade granola), Eggs Hemingway (poached eggs with salmon) and New Orleans Wrap (marinated chicken, avocado, cherry tom, rocket, parmesan cheese and honey mustard dressing).
I ended up choosing the Eggs Hemingway, described as ‘two poached eggs on English muffins with groovy gravlax salmon, affection and home-made hollandaise sauce’. Well, they were so tasty that the affection is definitely reciprocated. My partner was also very happy with his Peck’s Burger.
We paired our food with a home-made iced tea, which should have been a bit sweeter, but that’s a matter of personal taste. We also tried the home-made smoothie with peanut butter, coconut, almond, milk and banana, which was amazing! As mentioned earlier, Velvet Peck is also very proud of their specialty coffees. We felt sad that we don’t like coffee in general, because the creamy cups of coffee looked adorable!
For dessert, we ordered some different cakes to share and compare. What we received, was a huge chunk of lemon and ginger cake, an equally large piece of carrot cake with nutmeg topping and a large ‘brookie’ (which is what happens when a brownie meets a cookie). The latter had the advantage of containing chocolate, which is possibly the reason why it became our absolute favorite.
Last but not least, I have to say something about Velvet Peck’s ecological awareness. They use metal straws instead of plastic ones. Instead of selling plastic water bottles, they offer free mint-infused tap water. And finally, they also offer reusable coffee cups to take away. You can buy one for 1 EUR and when you return it, you get your 1 EUR back. That’s just an extra reason to add Velvet Peck to your list!
