Noordzee - Mer du Nord

Noordzee - Mer du Nord is one of my favorite places for apéro on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. After waking up late, it’s nice to go for a stroll in the city center and have a lunch at this fish shop aka fish bar on the corner of Place Sainte-Catherine. Given the amount of people gathering around this place, many people think the same way. On the bright side, the wait is never too long and it’s definitely worth it!

Fish shop and fish bar

As mentioned earlier, Noordzee is two-faced. On one side, it’s a fish shop where you can buy fresh fish to take home. The offer varies depending on the catch of the day.

On the other side, or rather around the corner, you'll find a large steel counter where people line up to order fresh tapas-style seafood. The blackboard behind the counter lists all the options, among which you’ll find their traditional fish soup, fish à la plancha, calamari, fresh oysters and many more.... Although the abundance of options may seem overwhelming, you can’t really go wrong as everything is absolutely delicious. If I can give you one recommendation: don’t miss out on their Belgian shrimp croquettes. The portions are usually served with some Belgian tartare and a slice of lemon, and they’re perfect for sharing.

After ordering, grab one of the high tables across the street and wait until they call your name. In the meantime, enjoy a glass of white wine, which goes very well with seafood. All in all, having become an authentic tradition in Brussels, Noordzee is a great place to meet up with friends, enjoy great food and experience the art of living.
