Donki
Do you know how ‘donkey’ translates in Spanish? Burro, or burrito if it’s a small one. This is all you need to know to understand what Donki is about. This Mexican burrito bar with two locations in Brussels serves tortillas and taco’s stuffed with all the fresh ingredients of your choosing. All of this happens in a colorful setting, which adds instant happiness to the food. Although we tried the restaurant at Place Jourdan, most of this information applies to the Louisa setting as well, as all the Donki bars have adopted the same menu, concept and design.
How does it work?
You order at the counter by composing your own meal. This happens in a specific order. First, you choose your tortilla or taco’s. Then, you pick your meat (or a vegetarian alternative) and salsa. You can even order an extra guacamole serving to top things off. If later on, you want to spice up your food, you can always add some ‘salsa de habanero’ which you’ll find on every table.
The drinks menu offers a variety of classics along with some special guests. This is the opportunity to try the Mexican soft drink Jarritos, which comes in three different flavors: tamarind, mango or pineapple.
Your order will be ready in no time. Now you can take it up to the seating area downstairs, upstairs or to the outdoor terrace on Place Jourdan. As the burrito comes wrapped in aluminum foil, it is also easy to take away. On the downside, this involves quite some waste production, even if you eat on the spot.
The setting
We picked a table upstairs, as we were fond of the design of that seating area. The entire place is bright and teeming with vibrant colors, funky patterns and trendy accents. On the background, Mexican music is playing. Everything looked so cheerful that I instantly felt happy myself.
And I hadn’t even started eating. In front of me, a giant burrito was giving me a defiant look. Oh, you think I can’t handle you? Let’s see about that. Things got dirty (literally), but the burrito hadn’t reckoned with my perseverance. So that was the end of Mister Burrito. And the beginning of a happy belly.
