Le bastringue

The word 'bastringue' refers to a popular dance event with French music... or as the owner explains: a noisy place. We came early in the afternoon when it was still quiet, but in the evening the bar fills up and buzzes with atmosphere.

From noon until evening, fresh and home-made food is catered. With specialities such as steak, filet de boeuf and souris d'agneau, carnivores will be in heaven. Another option is to order a cheese and prosciutto platter and share it with your company. Dining out in Paris isn't very expensive, but drinking usually is. In this bistro, even the prices for drinks are very reasonable: a cocktail costs just 5 euros, and a glass of wine is between 2 and 5 euros. Also check out their home-made rhum-based liquors.

The customers here are young Parisians, families, as well as tourists from a nearby hotel. It is a local bistro where many 'habitués' gather around the large semi-circular counter, but everyone is welcome.

One of the walls is entirely covered by a huge mirror on which the menu is written down with chalk. A couple of times a year, different bars from the neighbourhood organise a large petanque competition. Le Bastringue is conveniently situated along the canal de l'Ourcq, on which quays there's lots of space for games. On occasions like these, the menu is wiped off to make place for the names of the different teams and their scores.
