Restobières

Definitely one of the most original restaurants in the Marolles neighborhood, Restobières offers a variety of traditional dishes that all have one ingredient in common: Belgian beer. It is no surprise that the beer list is extensive as well. This tribute to our Belgian liquid gold takes place in an authentic Brussels setting full of character that features a surprising interior design…

Setting

Situated in the Rue des Renards, Restobières is situated close to Place Jeux de Balles, which makes it a convenient spot for a bite after browsing through the goods on the daily flea market. This area is teeming with nice restaurants like Bar Tapas 177, El Fontán, Chaff and other places I’ve previously discussed.

A special interior

Restobières stands out thanks to its particular design that turns the place into some kind of “museum" of lovely old stuff. You’ll go all ooh-aah as you walk in this quirky place adorned with old, nostalgic articles like tin boxes, old cookery equipment, vintage furniture and special posters. The coffee grinders on the back wall have notes in them from previous customers. Feel free to add your own too. All these elements bring to mind similarly-designed places like Meme Café and L’Ancien Bruxelles.

Thanks to its large seating area, Restobières has the capacity to accommodate large groups. There is an outdoor terrace in front, some tables in the back courtyard, a large seating area downstairs and another one of the first floor.

As a cabaret artist, owner Alain Fayt is always keen on providing entertainment with some improvised sketches. His props are never out of reach. If you meet him, ask about Brussels to get him started ;-)

The food

As for the food, Restobières offers a unique twist to Belgian gastronomy by adding beer to their culinary treats. Some of the classics on their rather meaty menu are fish cassolette à l’Ostendaise, beef stew, homemade Bloempanch (Brussels blood pudding), rabbit with prunes and ham shank... The pairing between food and beer is a match made in heaven. Blanche de Watou, Hommelbier, geuze Girardin, Rodenbach and kriek Boon Mariage Parfait are just a few of the main ingredients used for cooking. The specific type of beer used in each dish is also mentioned on the menu. The portions are large and reasonably priced.

It goes without saying that their beer list is extensive as well with beer from different breweries in and around Brussels. One of them is the Formi Diable beer, which brewery Van Eecke brews exclusively for this restaurant.

The Restobières book of recipes

Those who wish to try their hand at cooking with beer can order the book ‘La cuisine à la bière’, written by the chef and owner Alain Fayt. It features 49 recipes for Belgian dishes with beer, along with some of Alain Fayt’s poems and original illustrations from 4 Brussels artists.

Note: The book cost 20 EUR and is only available in French, which makes it a convenient tool to practice your French!
