Best places to spot cherry blossoms in Schaerbeek

When nature comes to life again and springtime flowers add some magnificent splashes of color to the cityscape, you know Spring has officially arrived in Brussels. Some popular destinations to enjoy nature in Brussels include the royal greenhouses and Hallerbos, the bluebell forest, but few people know about the springtime wonders of Schaerbeek. During about two weeks in April, pink rows of Japanese cherry trees adorn several avenues of this commune. There is something irresistibly pretty about those pastel pink petals, especially in combination of with the many art nouveau houses in the area. Feeling curious? We’ve listed the best spots to watch cherry blossoms in Schaerbeek below!

Between the Schaerbeek train station and the François Riga square

From the Schaerbeek station, walk up Avenue Huart Hamoir that leads up to the Sainte-Famille church. The square in front of the church is the François Riga square. This area is characterized by large avenues with a grass field in the middle, lined by pretty art deco houses and pink cherry trees.

Josaphat park (tram stop Chazal)

Coming from the northern side of the park (close to tram stop Chazal), you’ll enter the park through a pink cherry blossom arch. If you want to take a romantic photo with your beloved one, this is probably the best spot to do so. Parc Josaphat is also one of my favorite parks to picnic in Brussels and if you didn’t come prepared, you can even order a complete picnic basket from Josaphine’s.

Avenue Emile Max

If you didn’t know this street yet, I’ll give you three good reasons to head over and check it out. One, it features the beer bar Python where you can get lots of original craft beers and sit on their cozy outdoor terrace when the weather allows. Two, at the end of the street lies Place des Chasseurs Ardennais where a weekly market takes place on Friday afternoons. It’s a great place to sample some local products and have an apéro with friends. Three, it’s lined by beautiful houses and pretty cherry trees that are in full bloom in Spring.

Just one block from Avenue Emile Max, you’ll find Avenue Diamant which also features many beautiful art deco and art nouveau houses.

Place des Bienfaiteurs – Avenue Rogier

Finallly, Place des Bienfaiteurs is surrounded by houses in art nouveau and eclectic style. Walk further up through Avenue Rogiers to enjoy more cherry trees. A little bit further lies Le Zinneke, a Belgian restaurant where the menu is a customized comic book. It's a great place to treat yourself to a typical Belgian meal after your cherry blossom quest in Schaerbeek.
